Aspen Institute at 75: A Global Legacy, a UK Mission

May 14, 2025

In 2025, the Aspen Institute marks its 75th anniversary – a global milestone celebrating a legacy of leadership, values-based dialogue, and a commitment to building a freer, fairer, and more just world.

A moment in time, a movement for the future

The Aspen Institute was born out of a moment of deep reflection in the aftermath of the Second World War. In 1948, Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke began envisioning a place where leaders from across disciplines could gather to consider not only how to rebuild economies, but how to restore a sense of human dignity, purpose, and ethical grounding in public life. That vision took shape the following year, in 1949, with the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation in Aspen, Colorado – a celebration of the German humanist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and a call for dialogue across specialities, cultures and ideologies.

Inspired by that event, Paepcke established the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies (now simply the Aspen Institute) in 1950 as a forum for values-based leadership and the exchange of ideas across sectors. From its earliest days, the Institute brought together thinkers, artists, scientists, and policymakers to ask enduring questions about what it means to live a good life, to lead with integrity, and to build a better society.

That founding spirit, rooted in curiosity, ethics, and shared humanity, continues to guide Aspen’s work around the world today.

Aspen in the UK: leadership with purpose

Aspen Institute UK is proud to be part of this global family, a network of Institutes in 17 countries in Central and North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australasia, which share a strong belief in the power of dialogue and the responsibility of leadership.

Founded in 2019, Aspen Institute UK has grown into a vibrant space for public, private, and civic leaders to come together and confront some of the most pressing challenges of our time. From democratic resilience and technological disruption to climate leadership and global cooperation, our programmes are rooted in a simple but powerful premise: that societies are stronger when leaders are guided by values, listen across divides, and act with courage and humility.

Our seminars, fellowships, and public events convene leaders from across the UK and beyond, from Cabinet ministers and diplomats to campaigners, scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs. We provide space not just for answers, but for questions. Not just for consensus, but for honest, values-led disagreement.

Looking forward

As we look ahead to the next chapter of Aspen’s global journey, we remain committed to the mission that began 75 years ago: to support thoughtful, bold, and principled leadership for the good of all.

We are deeply grateful to our community of Fellows, supporters, moderators, partners, and peers across the Aspen global network. Here’s to the next 75 years, and to the enduring power of dialogue to shape a better future.
