A Fellowship for an uncertain Europe
Written by Aspen UK Director, Olly Chapman.
Europe is living through a period of profound change.
The assumptions that once underpinned our politics, our security, and our sense of shared democratic direction no longer feel stable. War has returned to the continent in a way that has reshaped not only borders and alliances, but the moral and political landscape in which leaders must operate. Technology is accelerating faster than many of our institutions can meaningfully respond. Information is contested, truth is under pressure, and public trust feels increasingly fragile. Across Europe, those working in diplomacy, trade, security, and democracy are being asked to lead through conditions that are more volatile, more complex, and more consequential than at any point in recent memory.
This is precisely why we are launching the Aspen Kyiv–UK Leadership Bridge in collaboration with the Aspen Institute Kyiv.
This programme has been developed at, and for, a moment when the relationship between the UK and Ukraine carries not only political significance, but wider meaning for Europe’s future. Ukraine today stands at the centre of some of the defining questions facing Europe, including how democracy endures under pressure, how societies remain resilient in the face of war, and how innovation emerges even under the most difficult conditions. The UK, meanwhile, continues to play an important role in Europe’s security, diplomatic, and political response. We are bringing together leaders from both countries because Europe’s future will be shaped by relationships between people who are willing to think deeply, act responsibly, and work across borders in the face of extraordinary change.
At Aspen, we have long believed that leadership begins in reflection and grows through dialogue. The Fellowship is designed around that belief. It creates a space for leaders to step back from the noise of day-to-day pressures and think more deeply about the values that guide them and the future they are helping to shape. But reflection, on its own, is not enough. This programme is also about connection, collaboration, and action. It’s about building a durable UK–Ukraine network of leaders who can learn from one another and generate practical ideas that travel beyond the seminar room and into institutions and public life.
What excites us the most about the Aspen Kyiv–UK Leadership Bridge is that it is not only responding to the present moment but also preparing for the next one. The challenges facing Europe will not disappear quickly, and questions around democratic renewal, collective security, technological change, and international cooperation are only becoming more urgent. We cannot meet them with narrower thinking and thinner relationships, or leadership that is purely reactive – we need leaders who are intellectually serious, ethically grounded, internationally minded, and ready to work across difference.
That is what this Fellowship seeks to cultivate.
So, if you are a leader aged 30–40, working in security, diplomacy, trade, technology, democracy, or public life, and you want to build the relationships, perspective, and values-based leadership this moment demands, I encourage you to apply.
