We are living through one of the most interesting and turbulent times in US history. In the wake of the 2020 Presidential Election, this Aspen Socrates Seminar will provide a unique view of the evolution of the  constitution of the United States, and explore whether it is still fit for purpose.

The United States was not founded on a common ethnicity,  language, or religion. Instead, it was founded on a set of beliefs and convictions – ‘self-evident truths’ – which were embedded in the Constitution.

In this private seminar, we will be discussing some of the most famous speeches and texts from US history, alongside more contemporary pieces. They will provide a guide to a conversation on nationhood and citizens’ obligations. We will explore the context in which the texts were written and how they have influenced the evolution of the US.

We will discuss whether the achievements and legacy of the founding fathers should continue to dictate the landscape of modern politics in the US and beyond.
